A driving licence is a mandatory document for anyone operating a motor vehicle in India. Here's a complete guide covering the entire process from learner's licence to permanent DL.
Step 1: Learner's Licence
You must first obtain a Learner's Licence (LL). Apply online at parivahan.gov.in, book a slot, visit RTO with documents (age proof, address proof, medical certificate, photos), and pass a written test on traffic rules. Fee: ₹200-500. The LL is valid for 6 months.
Step 2: Permanent Driving Licence
After 30 days (but within 180 days) of getting your LL, apply for the permanent DL. You'll need to pass a driving test at the RTO. The test involves driving on a designated track demonstrating vehicle control, turns, hill starts, and traffic awareness.
DL Renewal
Driving licences are valid for 20 years or until age 50 (whichever is earlier). Renewal can be done online through parivahan.gov.in or at your RTO. Apply for renewal 1 year before expiry to avoid late fees.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
If you're planning to drive abroad, you need an IDP issued by your RTO. Valid for 1 year. Documents needed: Valid Indian DL, passport, passport photos, and fee of ₹1,000.
Documents Required
Age proof (Aadhaar, passport, birth certificate), Address proof (Aadhaar, utility bill, passport), Medical certificate (Form 1A from registered medical practitioner), Passport size photographs, and existing Learner's Licence (for permanent DL).
