The Indian monsoon can be harsh on vehicles. Waterlogged roads, heavy rain, and humidity can cause damage if your car isn't properly maintained. Here are essential tips to protect your vehicle during the rainy season.

Before Monsoon

Check and replace windshield wipers if worn. Ensure all lights are working — headlamps, fog lights, tail lights, and indicators. Get your brakes inspected — wet brakes need to be in top condition. Apply anti-rust coating on the underbody. Check tyre tread depth — minimum 1.6mm for safe wet grip.

During Monsoon

Never drive through waterlogged areas deeper than half your tyre height. If water enters the engine, it can cause hydrostatic lock — an extremely expensive repair. Use headlights even during daytime in heavy rain. Maintain extra following distance — wet roads need 2x the stopping distance.

After Getting Wet

Dry the car thoroughly, especially door jambs and boot edges. Check the air filter — if it's wet, it needs replacement. Clean and dry the brakes by lightly tapping them while driving slowly. Open windows to ventilate and prevent fungal growth on seats.

Insurance Tip

Ensure you have comprehensive insurance with engine protection cover (add-on). Standard policies may not cover engine damage from waterlogging. This add-on costs ₹1,000-2,000 extra but can save you ₹50,000-₹3,00,000 in engine repairs.
